Illinois law requires that all persons – drivers and passengers – wear seat belts. The law also requires that the seat belt be properly adjusted and fastened. It is illegal to place the seat belt behind your back or to place the shoulder belt under your arm. The lap belt is designed to protect the lower portion of the body in a crash and the shoulder belt protects the upper body.

The Cary Police Department participates in the Illinois Saved by the Belt program. This program is designed to recognize motorists who are innocent parties in traffic crashes and were saved from injury or death because they were wearing their seat belt. Several drivers and passengers have been recognized by the Police Department. For more information, visit the Illinois Division of Traffic Safety's website.
