Downtown Streetscape Improvement

PROJECT STATUS Preliminary design underway.  Solicitation of stakeholder feedback has begun with a public input meeting scheduled for November 17, 2016 (see invitation flyer at the bottom of this page for details).

The development of the planning for future improvements to the historic downtown district is summarized below, including the latest steps in the ongoing design process.

CONCEPT & MASTER PLANNING PHASES (2015/2016)


​The initial concepts for future improvements to the downtown streetscape began in 2015 as part of the planning for the multi-year capital improvement plans.  Based on the concepts presented during the budget process, development of a Downtown Streetscape Master Plan was approved so that details could be in place should grant money or other funding become available in the future.  Exhibits from both the concept and master planning phases are shown below.

DETAILED DESIGN PHASE​ (2016/2017)


​Funding in the current fiscal year 2017 budget was allocated to the detailed design of future streetscape improvements in the historic downtown district based on the master plan that was completed in 2016.  The current design work provides detailed plans and specifications for a "shovel-ready" initial phase of improvements along West Main Street that could be utilized to solicit construction bids should funding or grant assistance become available in the near future.  The design would also include a pre-final level of detail for the other streets in the downtown area that could quickly be brought to final engineering for these future phases.

Public Outreach

​Before the final engineering is initiated, feedback from project stakeholders (residents, local businesses, etc.) is being requested at a public input meeting on November 17, 2016.  The meeting will be an open house format from 5pm-7pm where the public can view preliminary design exhibits, ask questions, and provide feedback on the project. Residents and business owners are encouraged to visit the lobby of the BMO Harris Bank (122 W. Main Street, Cary) any time between 5pm and 7pm and share their thoughts on this exciting project.
