This “scam” is one of many ways to try to obtain personal information from an individual that will be used in later Identity Theft activities. The Internal Revenue Service will not contact you by telephone if there is an issue with a taxpayer.
The Cary Police Department reminds residents to not provide personal identifying information to any individual that calls you that you do not know or did not initiate. If you have any further questions about this topic, please call the Cary Police Department at (847) 639-2341.
To report being the victim of this type of call, report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1.800.366.4484 or at www.tigta.gov.
